Diminishing real net output ratios in industrial countries, accompanied by the megatrends of globalization and specialization as well as shorter product life cycles, have a major impact on customer behaviour, market dynamics and the logistics network:
  • Companies need to have an overview of the supply chain – from the supplier’s supplier to the customer’s customer – and be able to control and manage it.
  • Logistics service providers must accept the challenge of adapting the supply chain so that they can react to customers’ requirements flexibly and easily and safeguard and develop their own market position

By using enterprise software for supply chain management (SCM), companies aim to optimize the value chain from a strategic, tactical and operative standpoint. Business processes are refined in terms of efficiency and effectiveness at every stage of the supply chain, starting with the procurement of the raw materials through to the sale of the finished product to the end customer. They are then integrated and mapped in a seamless process, supported by information and communication systems. Furthermore, companies are forced to constantly pursue new innovations, react quickly and flexibly to market changes and respect customers’ requests for service. Companies cannot achieve this without working closely with other companies. In doing so, they need to keep costs to a minimum or even reduce costs to maintain their positions in the battle for market leadership by implementing the supply chain in the market across the group.

Information for SCM comes mainly from the areas of logistics, marketing, production, group management, group costing and controlling. It is divided into four areas of integration:
